10 traditional Indian dishes that are best enjoyed during the winter season

You know winter has arrived in India when you see heaps of groundnuts being sold on every street. Winter season in India is the best time to gorge on sweets and dishes dripping with ghee because you can always hide the kilos you pile up beneath the many layers of clothes as the temperatures dip!

Gajar ka halwa tops the charts when it comes to the most popular sweets consumed during the winter season in north India. There's Mysore Paak that is prepared especially during Diwali down south and Undhiyu in Gujarat that is enjoyed only when the mercury plummets.

From 'rogan gosht' to 'sarso da saag', these are the Indian dishes that can warm you up during the cold winter season.

Sarso da saag: Sarson ka saag is a traditional Punjabi dish made in the winters which also happens to be the harvest season. It is best consumed with makki ki roti, butter and jaggery. Rich in iron and protein, sarso ka saag also comes with nutritional benefits.

Rogan Gosht: A winter delicacy from Kashmir, rogan gosht uses nuts and dry fruits as ingredients. The famous Kashmiri spices make this a fiery dish that is best enjoyed in the winter season. Mutton in this dish keeps the body warm as temperatures dip.

Sali boti: A popular Parsi meat dish, Sali Boti is served on a bed of potatoes (known as Sali in Parsi) with mutton, which is a part of every Parsi’s staple diet. This is one food item that finds its place on the menu at every Parsi occasion. The mutton and ginger in this dish make it perfec t to be consumed during winters.

Undhiyu: A Gujarati mixed vegetable dish, undhiyu is traditionally cooked in earthen pots on fire. This seasonal dish is prepared during winters when peas, beans, and eggplants are grown in Gujarat. It is served with puris at weddings and banquets.

Gobhi shalgam achaar: This pickle is served during the winters when you get the best quality of cauliflower, turnips and carrots. Ginger, garlic, red chillies and spices make this pickle most suitable for the winter season.

Gond ke laddoo: These sweet dish is a traditional sweet that is more popular in north India. Made of edible gum extracts, ‘gond’ is known to be a warm food that provides energy to the body to fight the winter chills.

Mysore Paak: Mysore Paak is a rich sweet dish prepared in butter that is usually served as a dessert in south India. Rich in ghee, sugar and gram flour, this sweet dish is made for the winter season.

Habshi halwa: The habshi halwa gets its name from its dark colour. The sticky sweetmeat is made of milk, sugar and clarified butter. It is served with nuts and is only prepared from October to March in most sweet shops in India.
